I am currently workingon a proposed researchstudy. The study consist of attitudes of early childhood educators and their encouragement or non-encouragement of father engagement in their programs. The study is qualitative. The staff that will be interviewed consist of teachers, teacher assistants and socialworkers. The variables are: age of staff person, marital status, educationlevel, length of time employed in the program, The basis of the study is Social Constructionism Theorywhich implies that a person’s learned experience influence the construction of their beliefs and values, thus having some effect on their attitudes based on their belief of the given situation. If you were measuring this study, how would you utilize the measuring method of correlation with a hypothetical research question relative to the study. Providing an example would help me to understand better the measuring approach of correlation in a quantitativestudy.
I believe this should have been the route in the first place. I think this means going back to the original proposal as previous and working your way up from that. As this is a ‘reconstruction’, I suggest going back to one of the original materials we have developed using this simple outline:
1. Introduction – what is the study about? 100 words
2. Relevance of study (relate to personal challenges) – 100 words
3. Hypothesis – 100 words
4. Methodology, Instrument of measure & variables, theory – 200 words
5. Research Questions – 100 words
6. Operationalising the research – 100 words
7. Analysis – explain the method – 100 words
8. Data types & other applicable analytical methods – 100 words
This is the same outline I have suggested previously for the qualitative method and it should work well here (always stick with grounded theory if you are to use social constructionism as a theory, otherwise you might have a difficult time in pinning a theory to a method). It’s a bit challenging since we now know that your professor is very specific in what must be in a proposed research. But if the professor goes back to you and asks you to rework it, don’t worry. Remember, it’s all part of perfecting something and a PhD is always a work in progress until you successfully defend your dissertation from the criticism of a board. So do expect revisions upon revisions so you won’t feel down when it happens. Just let me know if you need further clarification. All the best with everything!
Research Proposal: Early Child Educators – Experience and Attitudes
As a practicing professional in the field of social work, one of my main areas of responsibility is the management of a team of early childhood learning experts/educators whose job is to work with specific clients – child and their families – for the purpose of putting together a learning experience that can provide a strong foundation for the child essential to the standard of development expected for particular age groups in early childhood learning. Also referred to as a child’s ‘Early Years’, it is posited that positive learning experiences support positive long term outcomes for children. Over the years, experts and essential social institutions like the Government of Scotland, UK (2008) have concluded that during the early years, “children should be valued and provided for within communities; the importance of strong, sensitive relationships with parents and carers; the right to a high quality of life and access to play; the need to put children at the centre of service delivery; to provide more support through universal services when children need it; and that children should be able to achieve positive outcomes irrespective of race, disability or social background.” These ideals are not unique to Scotland, in fact, it is shared by the American leadership as advocated by the Obama Administration through its Whitehouse website (2013) “Research has shown that the early years in a child’s life—when the human brain is forming—represent a critically important window of opportunity to develop a child’s full potential and shape key academic, social, and cognitive skills that determine a child’s success in school and in life.” It is therefore no surprise that these ideals show in the projects, programs and goals of state and local governments too. In our city, my organization’s early childhood learning programs are managed, conceptualized and rolled out by early childhood education experts who, outside of their professional training and experience have their unique socializations to draw their attitudes, motivations and strategies from.
This particular study has been designed so as to explore how the attitudes, beliefs based on lived experiences of early childhood educators impact their encouragement of involvement with fathers in their program.
